Student Society President-Elect Removed Due to Conservative Activist Posts
The president-elect of the Oxford Union has been ousted from office after failing a no-confidence vote that followed his disputed social media posts about the conservative activist.
The vote against the student leader achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an announcement from the society.
Contentious Posts
The controversy began after the student reportedly shared messages on social media that appeared to welcome the killing of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while addressing a university in Utah.
According to reports, one social media message reportedly read "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have written in a WhatsApp chat with other members appearing to welcome the incident.
Election Results
The no-confidence motion took place over the weekend, with outcomes revealed on this week.
Society announcements indicated that 1,228 ballots were cast supporting removal, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The notice stated that the president-elect was considered to have stepped down in accordance with the Oxford Union's rules.
Election Controversies
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the election official was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from multiple individuals.
In a response, Mr Abaraonye claimed that the count had been halted because electoral officials believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of procedural failures".
His statement categorically refuted that any person acting for the student had participated in threatening or obstructive conduct.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that significant concerns had been referred to the governing body and that he continued as the elected leader.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who supported a "safe election and resist attempts to subvert democracy".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "signal to the world that the Oxford Union has prioritized politics over principles".
External Reactions
On recently, Mikey McCoy read out an open letter to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "student leaders publicly celebrate the assassination of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and advise them against future participation".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned the student's comments after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints filed against him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of multiple members to debate with the activist at the society in spring.
